I’m sure we’ll talk about Spirit a lot on Monday, but I just wanted to post some initial thoughts. I thought it was interesting how the creators of the film built up the scene with Little Creek and Spirit when they are both imprisoned. Native Americans, more than any other culture, represent freedom in nature. Spirit, obviously, represents freedom in nature as well. As a result, the expected outcome (at least for me) was for Little Creek and Spirit to break free together and then go their separate ways. The recapture of Spirit by the Lakotas was interesting, because it sent the message that all humans just want to capture nature and use it for their own needs. For some reason, I was expecting the escape from the fort to be a statement against the “civilized society”, but I was wrong. Did anyone else feel the same way while watching that scene?
Note that I hadn’t seen the movie before.
